This year (1986) we were able to add nine species to our 1961
list, two of these species being recorded in time to be included in the
mid-year list. The first addition resulted from the recent separation
of the Lesser Common Rustic from The Common Rustic. A specimen taken by
Alan Roberts at Knutsford in 1985 was the first to be so identified, but
it has been shown to occur in several other places since. In June, Alan
Roberts took the Silky Wainscot amongst the reeds at Rostherne N.R.
In July, the Davidsons took a Blackneck at Shavington, presumably
a wanderer from the newly discovered colony in Staffordshire. Bill Hardwick
was working the Abbots Moss Woods during the summer and took both the
Red-necked Footman and the Large Ear (A.lucens), both new to our
records. Paul Griffiths recorded the Scorched Carpet at Broomhall, Peter
Holmes had the Plain Pug at Bromborough, and Mike Passant had the Northern
Rustic at Bramhall. Finally, in the autumn, the Lesser Treble-bar was
taken in Poynton, Bromborough and Shavington. It must have been with us
all the time but no-one had previously separated it from the much commoner
Treble-bar.
There were several other interesting records from around the County.
In particular Obscure Wainscot was taken in fair numbers near Moore (SJ58)
by Steve McWilliam. He has clearly discovered a breeding site for this
species for which we previously had only a single record, which must have
been a vagrant. Canon Rylands took a Pale Pinion at his new home near
Bunbury in SJ55. Bill Hardwick took Archer's Dart and Burnet Companion
well away from their previously recorded localities. No less than three
Clearwings were recorded which must be a record in itself! Paul Griffiths
found and photographed a Yellow-legged Clearwing near Crewe in SJ75, there
was a Lunar Hornet Clearwing seen in SJ98, and a Currant Clearwing in
Wilmslow in SJ88; the latter not a new record for the square but notable
nonetheless.
Again there have been plenty of records of more common insects. Steve
McWilliam having added 82 species in SJ58, Bill Grayson who operates a
trap on the West side of Northwich and who has only recently heard of
our recording scheme, has added about 50 species to the records for SJ67,
and Bill Hardwick recorded over 30 new species in SJ56. These three squares
bring the number with 200 or more species up to 23. There were 10 or more
new records in squares SJ38, 54, 55, 64, 66, 75, 77, 86 and 98, which
brings SJ98 very near to the 300 mark. In 1982 a survey carried out in
the Eaton Hall estate and during the year I was given access to the detailed
records from that survey; from these I have extracted some 40 new records
for SJ45. The total number of new records since the preparation of the
list in June amounts to over 450 and an addendum to the list is given
below:
C.I. Rutherford (February 1987).
This supplement also includes records from earlier
years which had failed to find their way into my records due, mainly, to
a rather haphazard system. With the production of a new list based on the
latest classification and the use of recording cards based upon the same
list it is to be hoped that there will be less omissions in the future.
If recorders will use the new cards the errors should be reduced.
While there were several omissions there was, so far as I know, only
one significant error. This concerned 1984 The Humming-bird Hawk-moth,
all of whose original records should be deleted and replaced by records
for the following squares: SJ28, 46, 54, 77, 87 and 97.
The following new records for the 10 Kilometre squares with
(SJ) have now been added to the records held: - an asterisk (*) indicates
a new species for the county; the number at the extreme left is the Bradley
& Fletcher code from their publication: "A Recorder's Log Book or Label
List of British Butterflies and Moths" - J.D. Bradley and D.S. Fletcher
