Cheshire Macro-Moth Report - 1987

No doubt 1987 will be long remembered as a very poor year for entomology but the records do not fully justify this assessment. Six were added to our list of species recorded since 1960, this is well up on our average over recent years. We also have over 450 new records bringing the total to about 7350 for our 31 squares which is an average of over 250 species per 10km square.

The two 'best' squares are running neck and neck to be the first to 350 while two more (SJ77 & 98) have passed the 300 mark. There were no additions to the 23 squares with 200 species but there was great activity in most of the previously little worked squares and there is now only one (SJ36) with less than 100 species recorded and now that Mrs Constable in Blacon has an effective trap the figure should soon be passed. We must welcome another lady recorder to our ranks, Ann Kearsley of Gee Cross in SJ99, who together with Geoff Oldham of Romiley have already added over 50 species to the records for that square and more will undoubtedly follow. I concentrated my efforts on SJ86 where the new Woodlands Trust property of Park Moss Wood near Arley proved a little disappointing in terms of variety of species recorded. Only in two of our 31 squares did we get no records at all in the year, these were SJ37 and 54, the latter was well worked by Peter Atherton for some years but he has now left the County.

Of the six new species, three were due to the efforts of Steve McWilliam and all must be regarded as resident species which have been overlooked for many years; Small Brindled Beauty in Delamere Forest, Fen Wainscot at Moore Nature Reserve and Coast Dart at Wallasey. Alan Roberts took two specimens of Freyer's Pug at Knutsford, this must be a recent coloniser of garden cupressus planting; Bill Hardwick's record of Marbled White Spot, the first since 1901 !!, may be a wanderer but Hogshead Wood seems to be the sort of terrain on which it would occur so we may hope it is confirmed; my Scarce Bordered Straw at Alderley Edge seems to be the first time this migrant has been seen in Cheshire since 1901. Another migrant of note was the Death's Head Hawk-moth found in Marple, the first for many years, we had no Convolvulus though I hear this was not uncommon in Lincolnshire, we did however, have the Vestal again.

Other species not seen for many years of which confirmation is welcome include: Purple-bordered Gold at Wybunbury National Nature Reserve, Marsh Pug in Stockport, Heart and Club from Halton Common, and Barred Sallow at Alderley Edge. The widespread recording of some species not previously seen in any numbers is also pleasing, particularly Streamer, Pale Tussock, Dotted Rustic and Oak Nycteoline.
