Appendix 4: National and Local Invertebrate Recorders Listing

Please note:  Details of recording schemes can alter, sometimes on a frequent basis, as the people who run them change their interests, become disillusioned with the lack of interest shown by other invertebrate workers, conversely become swamped with data, their family circumstances change, the scheme completes its original targets and objectives, the scheme is passed on to a 'new' organiser, or even that the organiser dies. Consequently it is always advisable when making initial contacts with a scheme not to send your data straight away but to write first and ensure that the scheme is still viable and that the organiser would welcome your data.

An up to date list of currently registered, national recording schemes can be obtained from: The Biological Records Centre, Institute of Terrestrial Ecology, Monks Wood Experimental Station, Abbots Ripton, Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, PE17 2LS  -  (Tel.: 01487-773-318 - or Fax: 01487-773-467 - or E/Mail: p.harding@ite.ac.uk)

The Monks Wood Biological Records Centre being the organisation from which most of the national invertebrate recording schemes are led and controlled, and even funded in some cases.

Many other recording schemes, both National and Local, are extant throughout the country. Some of these can be found in the Amateur Entomologists' Society (AES) publication "A Directory for Entomologists" by Duncan Reavey and Mark Colvin; this can be purchased from the AES at the address shown in "Groups & Societies" above. Other schemes and more detail can be found in the various issues of the Lancashire & Cheshire Entomologists' Society Newsletter (published Quarterly) which can be obtained from the LCES Secretary, c/o Liverpool Museum, William Brown Street, Liverpool, L3 8EN.

Many of these National Recording Scheme organisers also run an identification service, usually free of charge, for those who are not adept or do not possess the skills necessary for identifying specimens caught. If you have specimens which need identifying, always, contact the scheme organiser before sending the specimens through the post. When the specimens are sent, following agreement with the organiser, make sure they are well packed and padded with 'bubble plastic wrap' to help prevent breakage due to shock damage. All specimens must be accompanied by a data label which records essential data, this being: the date the specimen was caught, the name of the site where it was caught, the Ordnance Survey Grid Reference of the spot/site at which it was caught, the name of the person who caught the specimen; other information about how it was caught, the habitat within which it was caught and what the specimen was doing is all useful but not essential.
